Discussion of Production Blog #7 for RollerCoaster Tycoon World (http://www.rollercoastertycoon.com/rollercoaster-tycoon-world-production-blog-7/)

Dear Fans,
Just a short update this week and a little teaser on what we have been working on.
Tech is working diligently on their current milestone – an upgraded coaster editor, while Design is fleshing out the details of the user interface systems.

NOW!!! the Art team, just delivered some amazing new shots of a coaster on a track. Below are two of these screenshots, taken directly from the game engine. They are unedited and untouched with the exception of the disabling of the skybox, supports, and ground (still works in progress).

We are making full use of the engine’s ability to support next-gen graphics and textures. Even the below shots do not show all of the improvements and polish details that are yet to be made.

If you remember, a few weeks ago I asked in a thread on our forums (https://forum.rollercoastertycoon.com/showthread.php?2916-Rollercoaster-wheel-bevels) about the underpinning of a coaster and the wheels. Now you know why! http://www.rollercoastertycoon.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif?9de0fa We really want to make sure we are accurate and high quality with our in-game assets and we show you how your feedback is making its way into the game. Can anyone identify what coaster type this is?

See you in the forums!

It looks great if the whole game looks like this and the managing part is done well I think this will be as a good sell as RCT3

Woah! This was the update i was hoping for.

Looks really neat and detailed even the small bolts above the wheels really awesome!
Now to just get rid of that old trailer that ruined everyone's hope and in its place put a trailer with the current GFX and i see a AAA title done right again :)

In short: can't wait to see more! Also some multiplayer details would be welcome cause it could pan out to be one of its most awesome features if done right. Keep it up guys.

I will echo what others have said, even short updates like this are enough to keep people interested.

Absolutely fantastic to see the level of detail!

Thanks for sharing this! I look forward to seeing more teasers like this being posted.

As a small side note, you may want to edit this slight error in the post:

Oh goodness. If so, I wouldn't know why. Something about vibration and resonance, maybe?
A B&M is like a Porsche - they have that distinct roar that is uniquely B&M.

Awesome! Mattlab gave us a couple pics of current status (though not a fan of super detail when it comes to coasters as much as how the game will play) well done. A great idea to post a couple pics (did that idea come out of any posts about blog post #6?)

That was my first thought - as in TPS. Requires a larger texture file though and adds a little complexity when it comes to colour changing the tracks.

The model looks great, it really does. Also good to see another blog so soon!

I can't wait to see something new about the game itself though. Graphics are easy, and truthfully Unity takes care of most of that. The key stuff I'd love to see Atari showing off about is things like making the game work in a useable way without a grid and better management of CS and coaster supports etc. These are the things that are quite awkward to achieve but valuable to have. They are the things that would demonstrate a commitment to make another great RCT game.

Graphics are great, and I am a sucker for eye-candy. But graphics are also relatively easy and don't define a games quality.

Looks pretty nice. Not to nitpick but shouldn't this have four strategically placed bolts at each cross-tie? I'm genuinely just asking. I honestly don't know!?

Also, and although it hasn't been fully-discussed; The idea that a coaster can age (paint fade, well worn areas on track) would be great to see. As a gaming aspect, the player could "refresh a ride" when guest satisfaction starts to dwindle.

That was the first thing I noticed after how great in looks (this can't be the same game :O , something seems "wrong" with the track, I think it is what you said and the lack of width in the track design. But this are just details, you've done an amazing job and thanks mattlab for posting! Just what we wanted.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BvkzmhkIgAEcglI.jpg A good image how b&m track looks like up-close. Maybe there is some copyright problem? But the track in RCT3 was very b&mish and it would seem very strange if coaster companies would have a problem with it being used in a game. Oh, please don't forget triangle, box and double spine track, mmmm :D

I think it is what you said and the lack of width in the track design.

My drawing's still kinda wrong, too. They got it right with the perpendicular part before the angled bevel.
But critiques aside, that is some fantastic modeling! This really made my Monday.

Ah ok, so it's only at certain sections. Well that makes sense. Cool to know. I always thought those massive bolts looked kinda cool in Nolimits. perhaps a bit overdone here, but still gives an idea of how the track could look, and "age".

From NoLimits (NOT RCTW!!!) Visual comparison ONLY.

Thanks, Mattlab, great to see some screenshots of work in progress. Just a small observation, and it's in no way bad... I see minute detail added here, such as bolts on the undercarriage wheel braces. While detail is great, we're very unlikely to see this level of detail in play. As I said, it's not a bad observation, and the level of details is great indeed, but it's just detail that players are very unlikely to see. Still, keep it up, it looks great! While the pics looked very nice, I want to see some screenshots.

The Stig
05-18-2015, 10:57 PM
If not for the screenshots, I would never have known this either:

For sit down coasters, the underside of the cross-ties are straight

http://i700.photobucket.com/albums/ww8/jullland3/rien/2.jpg

But for inverted coasters, the underside is rounded:

http://i700.photobucket.com/albums/ww8/jullland3/rien/1.jpg

Now I'm 99% sure on this, but it's more than likely because the larger "road" wheels always ride on top of the rail, so they take that bit of metal out to accommodate for the larger wheel being on that side of the cross-ties.

And if I could throw in just one more bit of criticism, I'd say that your rails are either a tiny bit too big, and/or a tiny bit too high.

QFT. I didn't really disliked the cartoony style from before, but I would prefer a more realistic style. These screenshots from the coaster architecture can mean they dropped the cartoon style from unity 4 and moved on to more realistic looking graphics overall. I really hope we can have rides and scenery with lots of detail :).

Well done to Matt and the development team (whoever they are now lol), these game assets are looking much better now.

My main worry for the game at the moment, is how is the marketing team going to reverse the public's opinion of that first gameplay trailer? Of course, us RCT fans who visit your forum and can see the changes you are making will be excited, but I am sure the majority of your audience discovered the game through third party websites (ie IGN etc..), were put off by that trailer and are going to be very difficult to brought back into awareness of the work you are now doing. RCTW has been put out of their minds so will this affect the success of the game, even if it turns out great?

Looks awesome! Really excited for the game.

I am not sure if this was covered or not yet, but what are the thoughts on being able to take a ride design from a previous game (RCT3 would be most likely if any) and download it to RCTW? It would be awesome to use some of my favorite and more successful rides in the new game with a simple download!

Thanks Mattlab!

This looks pretty damn awesome and it looks like the design team knows what's expected by the fans.
Of course some people might still complain but please don't bounce back. What you showed looks good and I think the (hopefully) realistic graphics will bring rct to a new level.

@Mattlab: I hope this is the beginning of regular production blogs with more screenshots or even some videos. Good luck with the new developer, they seem (sorry area 52) like the better choice for a AAA game.

My main worry for the game at the moment, is how is the marketing team going to reverse the public's opinion of that first gameplay trailer?

Fuzz

That's a good observation and question.

I'm not so sure there really IS a 'marketing team', I suspect that there's a lot of 'winging it' going on right now with a limited team with limited resources. I think we've clearly seen that Atari going silent isn't going to work, nor are the walls of marketing-speech that they put up previously.

I think the only thing that's going to likely work is COMMUNICATION, something they just haven't been very good at. I'd love to see them making more blog posts, even if just small ones like this one was. A screen or two, or a couple sentences on what they are working on would go a long way to winning people back if they keep at it, they really need to make sure that something is said a couple times a week, even if it's short and to the point - we aren't expecting a full-length article every week, but we are expecting to see signs of life and that they know we're out here.

I also would like them to be more honest - let us know if something isn't progressing well, and don't over hype things that are. Too many times we've been told something is amazing, only to find it's no such thing when we finally see it for ourselves. People can be tremendously understanding and forgiving when they feel they are a part of the loop. But people can also tell when their being fed a line...

Much of the frustration and bile expressed by fans at the video and the poor communication to date has to do with the large emotional and intellectual investment those fans have put into the game themselves over the years. Atari should constantly acknowledge that the fans are an important part of the team building RCTw, and remember that any team works best when there's real communication about working towards a common goal, be it a touchdown, or a video game.

I don't think that the number of people who saw the trailer and decided that they will not come back to look at the game once it is published is so large that it will seriously affect sales. When we have the game to play test and see beta releases, and either have reason to praise or reasons to disparage, that will affect. When we have pre release You Tube videos in abundance from reviewers and early release copies, then we will see buzz that matters.

And if we don't see any new video footage until release, then the trailer would matter.

Small things like that help get your fan base on board. Look at all the positive feedback you've received from arguably the shortest devblog you've written.

Thanks Mattlab this blog was really good, REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE the showing of the coaster track, it looks quite detailed, as someone mentioned before hope restored %15! this is such a good blog, actual visual progress and it really does look WAAAAAY better then the trailer....

Thanks to the stig! for some of those screenshots and some track info, thought you were just nit picking and then you posted those screenshots! good clarity on how the tracks are in real life.... I still love the track posted, personally I won't be noticing all that detail on the tracks themselves other than how it looks when a coaster moves along it...

Now THIS makes me happy. I've read every page and I haven't seen the first negative comment. I haven't seen the negative atmosphere that pushed me away. I can't explain how much happier this makes me, even if I am still skeptical. The track looks great. It really does. And the fact that it looks realistic without a cartoonish-spin is by all means an improvement from that train-wreck of a trailer. Thanks Mattlab. B&M track? YES!
The car looks good too; though the center part of the chassis (break block) should be narrow, while the joint holding the wheel assembly to the train should be a lot wider. I know it's just nitpicking but all B&M coasters pretty much have the same underside (http://i.imgur.com/pKiXBC3.jpg). I guess if you make an accurate recreation of the chassis and wheel assembly, you could reuse it on pretty much any coaster that uses the B&M box style track.
Other than that, my confidence in this game has increased tenfold.
If you include the sensor guide-rails on the underside (used for restraint control in the station)and the round pumper pads, you'd have a model that could beat the top Roller Coaster simulators.

It looks great. My suggestion for this game would be to make it closer to reality. I don't really like weird coaster that look like a kids toy. I want to see realistic coaster and animation. Also, since lots of computer got more and more advanced in terms or system performance, make sure you make the most out of it. I've got 16GB of RAM in my computer. It would be good to utilize at least half of them for game. We would see more and more computers come with more powerful RAM and Processor. Keep that in mind for 2-3 years in advanced.

These images are such a huge improvement! It looks like you're now actually building a realistic game for adults, rather than a cartoon game for kiddies. I hope this also means that the cartoon animal NPCs are gone. (Please say it's so!) Based on what we've seen of the game before this, my main concern was that it was being dumbed down to "appeal to all ages." That's not what anyone is asking for--even the kids.

Well, to be fair, I think the RCT series has always catered to a wide margin and has done a nice job towing the line between realistic and cartoony. You can be stylized but still be realistic. I'd like to see a peep upgrade, myself. They look so doofy in RCT3. That's the worst part as far as "kiddy" goes.

Yes, if two trains collide at a block segment, they absorb most of the impact.

In the trade we call it 'last resort engineering'. A bit like over engineering. If such things show sign of use, the cause of the issue gets addressed. In theory...

But if you look at mobile amusement park rides, you will see brightly coloured markers on many nuts. Same as the nuts on truck wheels. These are to reveal movement in the but since tightening torque was last applied. Whenever I go to a mobile amusement park, I can't help but check and there are always a few where the markers no longer line up! But I still ride of course :)

When I was last at Alton towers I noticed their latest coaster, the smiler, didn't appear to have damping pads. I thought it odd at the time but never thought of it again until I saw this post. Perhaps it's not a requirement just a common feature?

I've noticed that most Gerstlauer coasters don't have them. I guess this was only a real issue when we were using friction breaks as the primary method to slow trains; there's pretty much no risk of failure when it comes to eddy current breaks. If the laws of physics are working, the breaks will never fail (unless the magnets fall off the bottom of the train).

I've made some observations showing the model is probably not as high-poly as it looks.
My main concern though is that lighting glitch in the background.

edit: I'm not complaining, just making some observations on possible what to expect for polygon count. Just because it doesn't have hundreds of thousands of polygons doesn't mean it still isn't fantastically detailed. I'd take this as a final coaster model any day.

I should have been more clear on my part.

The biggest problem with that chassis is that it couldn't physically work on anything other than a dead level track! If you look carefully you can see that each bogie can rotate to follow curves in the track (correct) but also each set of two wheels need to be able to pitch back and fourth to keep both wheels in contact with the track as it undulates. BUT while the hinge pin that would allow them to move this way is shown on the model, the two parts that the pin connect in real life are shown as a single piece in the model. It's not just shown as a single part in the render either it 'is' a single part the way they created that model. You can tell by the fillet detail where the two parts that should be separate intersect.

This may not seem important, but it is. As that model is, there is no way it could run on a virtual track without the wheels appearing to rise above/dig into the rails as the car pitches and falls.

magicart87

Re: the model.

It could be that the model was extracted from the background using Photoshop's lasso polygon tool thus making the edges a bit linear. It would also explain why the anti-aliasing is soo smooth. But, if that's not the case as this truly is a direct image from the engine then I would wonder why the developer simply didn't just lathe that wheel design or just select a pre-set wheel or extruded circle from their 3d modeling program model library.

Do you expect them to go super high poly count? Why go with super high poly count? It'll push the engine less thus giving less lag. "Looks high, but you can see the edges" Are you serious? You would have to make the wheels 40 polys each to make them look like they don't have edges. 320 polys for car wheels? really?

No, Mattlab made it pretty clear that they just disabled the skybox/terrain/all other scenery, which explains the white background.

Not sure what you are talking about referring to the wheels. I think they look fine.

You have to rethink this.

If this is actually the correct model for the game with this amount of polygons,
the game will look amazing. Believe me.

You can't expect 60 fps gameplay with tons and tons of scenery/animations/calculations/light,shadow and specular maps and still have every little model to be subdivided to + 150 000 plygons. That's just not possible.

So if this model is the actual resolution of every other model, we have a bright future coming.
But still, they will need to work with sprites for trees and flowers.
It's not possible to model every plant and tree to actual 3D models.

I'm stoked !

After all this discussion for the realists subgroup of Peep/park Managers, I hope that the next blog post gives those of us concerned more with the gameplay side of things something to get all hyped about... I think that's the key ingredient of making games.

Making it look high poly with as little poly's as possible. They are doing a great job.

But my realistic self also thinks we need to be a lot more patient to finally see a real up to date gameplay teaser.

unclekrusty

Remember also that the gameplay is primarily from a bird's eye view. Since these things will be seen from a distance and only take up a small part of the screen, it shouldn't matter that much if they're not mega-smoothly modelled. And even if there's a first person camera option on the rollercoasters, it most likely won't show much of the car at all, let alone the parts that are lower poly.
